Exhaust System Access Panels
Access Panels allows the kitchen hood & exhaust system cleaning professionals to clean all of the ductwork that is accessible to reach and scrap. If we cannot reach or see from the access panel, fan or hood. Collection of grease and debris in these hidden areas can be very dangerous and create a much higher risk for a fire.
NFPA 96 specifies that an access panel be installed at least every 12 feet and are required every 12 feet (3.7 m)
every change in direction of horizontal ductwork, unless the duct is large enough for personnel entry openings.
Most Commercial kitchens do not have the required access to clean the system properly. With a typical scraper duct cleaning, access points must be installed every twelve feet. If it takes roughly twenty minutes to open just one access point, not including cleaning and closing that access point.
18.104.22.168 – On horizontal ducts, at least one 508 mm x 508 mm (20 in. x 20 in.) opening shall be provided for personnel entry.
22.214.171.124 – Where an opening of this size is not possible, openings large enough to permit thorough cleaning shall be provided at 3.7 m (12 ft) intervals.
Positioning of an access panel plays a very critical role in the cleanliness of the kitchen hood & exhaust system cleaning. It is important to position the access panels so you can reach in both directions and at every 90 degree turn in order to effectively clean the kitchen hood & exhaust system properly.
The only way these systems can adequately be inspected is if proper access panels are installed strategically throughout the length of the ducting system. Mid State Fire Prevention will do a complimentary inspection of your system to determine if any inaccessible areas exist and if an access panel is recommended to properly clean your system.
All Mid State Fire Prevention Crew Leaders have been trained and certified to safely install only UL Listed access panels in order to gain access to the inaccessible areas, clean them, and help prevent a grease buildup and more importantly help prevent fires.
